Abstract
The case presents the diversification experience of the Ashok Group into financial services. Mr. Ramkumar Barchha, the second generation leader of the group, is required to review the experience thus far and develop recommendations for the future. He has to decide whether to focus more on manufacturing or on the services business. The case describes the forays of the group into tin container manufacturing, hand operated plants for making the containers, kerosene stoves and machine tools. The performance and problems of each business are presented. The circumstances leading to the diversification of the group into financial services is also presented. It also discusses the issues in managing the family, workers and interfaces with customers.
