Abstract
The case is set in the context of a turnaround challenge faced by Yes Bank, which was on the brink of bankruptcy in March 2020. Yes Bank was the largest bank failure in the history of Indian banking. After failing to raise adequate capital, the bank was rescued by the Reserve Bank of India and a consortium of lenders, with the aim of safeguarding the interest of the depositors, as well as India’s banking system. Yes Bank was a private sector lender with superior growth during its early days. However, concentration in the corporate loan portfolio and credit exposure to non-performing assets paved the way for financial distress. Prashant Kumar, a seasoned banker from the State Bank of India, was put in charge of the bank as an administrator to oversee the turnaround. A moratorium on bank deposit withdrawals was announced by the RBI to understand the gravity of the situation and formulate plans to deal with the challenges. After a brief moratorium of about two weeks, the leadership of the bank decided to resume its operations with the permission of the RBI. The case is set in a context where Kumar must take key decisions to turnaround the bank.
