Vignettes on Diversity and Inclusion

* Required Fields

Abstract

The vignettes reveal challenges associated with fostering diversity and inclusion within organisations. Biases, mindsets, stereotypes, prejudices and lack of knowledge on the challenges faced by diverse people may provoke feelings of exclusion, lack of self-worth, anger and sometimes frustration. The vignettes highlight the impact of unfairness and inequality on the recipient, source and bystander. They present experiences of exclusion based on gender, age, disability, language, body image and neurodiversity.

Learning Objective The vignettes can be used to spur a conversation on diversity and inclusion, important elements at the workplace, in classroom/training sessions. It is only when the lack of diversity and inclusion and its adverse effects are recognised that individuals will change their behaviour and embrace inclusive practices. Discussions on the vignettes will enable students to 1. Understand the importance of inclusion and the effects of feeling excluded or of acting in a manner that excludes others 2. Recognise potential acts and sources of microaggressions, and how they contribute to the experience of exclusion 3. Become aware of unconscious biases that hinder inclusion 4. Reflect on ways to become inclusive towards those who are different from oneself
