Abstract
In March 2025, Aakanksha Devanshu Gandhi, President of Branding and New Business Development at Vadilal, and Shishir Shah, Manager at Vadilal, were planning the next phase of growth for the company. The brand, which was more than 100 years old, had experienced a difficult period. Financial challenges, and the disruption triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, had almost killed the brand. However, after successfully navigating these challenges, the growth agenda was back on track. Vadilal enjoyed high brand awareness and deep consumer trust among its customers. However, it was losing relevance among Gen Z customers. How could Vadilal build a deeper emotional connection among new generation customers with eroding trust, is the core issue that the case explores. The case documents Vadilal’s journey through four communication phases between 2022 to 2025. From product-first hoardings to brand mascots, the brand had explored and implemented various strategies to establish itself as a multi-generational brand. Yet, there are six critical dilemmas from communication to branding that remain. The case deals with the key idea of whether a brand built on nostalgia, trust and family association can achieve real relevance in a category that is increasingly moving towards individual consumption. The central question was as follows: What marketing moves would increase the relevance of the brand among younger generations without damaging the brand image that had been built over the years?
