Abstract
The case illustrates the nature of interaction between members of a village community on certain special occasions. The pattern of interaction reveals the underlying role relationships the leadership structure. It also brings out the rigidity or flexibility of norms in a village community, the various maintenance tasks of social authority. The six situations described in the case bring out the fact that when economic interests are involved, the social authority or social conscience is neutral; it neither favours nor disfavours any individual or group; it leaves the individuals to themselves to defend their economic interests.
