Abstract

Great Eastern Shipping Company (GESCO) was the second largest Indian shipping company, operating 48 ships. During 1994-95, GESCO had a turnover of Rs. 824.67 crore. The company had more than tripled its turnover over the previous five years. With the changing economic environment and increasing competition, the company was considering strategies for future and was reviewing its diversification plans. Various unit heads of the company had submitted proposals towards further growth in the first ever business plan conference organized by GESCO. The conference was exploring areas where the company could expand further. It was also making an assessment of resource requirements and their adequacy so as to define the priorities for future. Top management of GESCO was required to decide the directions for future and the portfolio of businesses in the context of the changed business environment.
