Abstract
Terraced cultivation has been conceived of as an alternative to shifting cultivation in the hills. The case deals with one such experience in Meghalaya. Facts collected by an independent research agency have been summarized to provide a basis for discussion-whether the effort is in the economic interests of the jhumias and society as a whole.
