Abstract
The note discusses two connotations of the concept of sustained forest yield, i.e. continuity of growth and continuity of supply. Some desirable aspects of sustained yield have been discussed. It points out that in India the concept seems to have been used independently of management in a business sense, and the foresters seem to have been primarily interested in maintaining the capital stock at hand. Has this resulted in complacency, low returns per unit of forest lands, and low investment in forestry? The note also forms a basis for discussion as to whether the concept of "sustained yield" could and should be replaced with "progressive yield."
