Abstract
The main focus of the case is on improving work methods. The present work method results in low output per piece of equipment and poor utilization of equipment. The poor utilization of equipment (steam locomotives) suggests that the present level of output can be obtained by using only two locomotives instead of the present three (thereby effecting considerable recurring savings) provided improved work methods can be found. The change of method actually involves a slight change in the layout too. The case is assigned after students have read the note Critical Examination Technique. They are expected to use this technique and after finding out the improved method they have to work out the savings.
