Abstract

Stakeholders Empowerment Services (SES), is a not-for-profit proxy advisory firm based in Mumbai, India, with over 40 employees. Founded by Jitendra Nath Gupta (JNG), SES primarily aimed to protect investors from corporate scandals by providing research-backed voting recommendations. JNG assembled a unique team with about 73% of employees coming from underprivileged backgrounds who initially lacked knowledge of the proxy advisory industry. JNG’s HRM model, based on common good principles and personal values, trained these employees to deliver highly competitive output. SES emphasized on a passion for learning, integrity and transparency withing a flat hierarchical structure, over formal degrees. The case concludes with JNG’s strategic decision to reduce his operational role. However, it raised the question of whether the team was prepared for JNG’s exit and if the distinct HRM model were to continue to serve as the foundation after his departure.
