Abstract
The case opens by highlighting that over 2,27,000 hectares or 59 per cent of the total forest land in Tripura supports less than twenty trees per hectare and is, thus, utilized. The Tripura Forest Development and Plantations Corporation has prepared a project to place 5,200 hectares of this land under intensive management. The corporation has also decided to raise rubber, citronella, and bamboo plantations in the project area. Technological and economic data pertaining to these crops have been presented. Results of financial return cost analysis of each crop and the project as a whole have been summarized. Each component of the project is found to be financially viable, but the relative return cost ratios are considerably different. These data form a basis for discussion on the allocation of the project area amongst the three crops. The allocations made by the corporation have not been specified in the case, but have to be known to an instructor handling the case, as these may appear to be totally illogical at first.
