Abstract
The note describes the social, political, and economic environment of a jagirdari village in the Mewar region of Rajasthan. It analyses the social and economic structures obtaining in the village and some of the changes in social and economic relations that have occurred in the past one hundred years. The analysis shows that the village society remained more or less stable throughout the jagirdari era despite droughts, famines, and skirmishes between jagirdars. The change process, however slowly, started only after the abolition of the jagirdari system, which led to changes in land relations, and the introduction of a variety of development programmes with focus on technological innovation. However, technological change has not been an unmixed blessing. It has benefited the cultivating castes while up rooting the artisan and service castes. But there has been no significant change in social stratification, though there are growing signs that it is losing its hold and sanctity.
