Abstract

The case presents details about how the organisation could inspire its volunteers to complete the project in time with minimal supervision and provide an amazing experience for the visitors. The PSM nagar was constructed within a span of 9 months (including the monsoon period in India from mid-June to September). It was built with the hard work and contributions of close to 80,000 volunteers who worked on the site as well as outside of it to manage the logistics and support needed for the festivities. Moreover, the entire land had been borrowed from close to 350 families (farmers, builders and private owners) who owned plots of different sizes in the 600-acre site. The event was a collective effort, and a lot of hard work and commitment was expended for its successful implementation. Mahant Swami Maharaj, the present head of BAPS and the committee of senior saints, wanted the centenary celebrations to inspire visitors as well as volunteers to work towards making leading a meaningful life, to spread the message of harmony and unity, to serve people and to overcome one’s limitations.

Learning Objective This case should be taught along with the case ‘Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav: Event Scale’ and could be taught over two classes in a class/course on leadership, organisational culture, non-profit management, design thinking and sustainability. The case illustrates how a non-profit can organise its volunteer workforce to deliver an ambitious project. Also, the two cases (Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav: Event Scale and the present one) together illustrate aspects of leadership, people management and organisational culture that could be learnt by not just not-for-profit organisations but also commercial organisations in both the private and public sectors. The main objectives of the case are: 1. Learn about aspects of leadership and organisational culture that went into creating a spirit of seva in the volunteers, which was instrumental in the execution of the project. 2. Explore the key factors of the organisation that enabled it to deliver a valuable experience for thousands of people across several days. 3. Discuss the lessons for other organisations (non-profit, for-profit and public-sector) in leadership, people management, innovation and project management. 4. Explore the differences and similarities in the development and running of the nagar and that of other Indian cities. Discuss what could be the lessons for other settlements ranging from temporary to permanent in under-developed and developing countries.
