Abstract
The note attempts to highlight some of the definitions, theories, functions and the emergence of a leader. The issue whether the leader and leadership is a property of the group or is the characteristic of an individual is discussed. Fourteen functions that a leader can perform and its relationship with the group are identified. These functions are classified into two broad categories: a) task or achievement functions, and b) maintenance functions. The same leader can carry out all the functions. In most organizations, distinct functions are allotted to separate offices and the occupants of these roles assume the responsibility for providing their unique functions.
