Abstract
The land ownership and distribution pattern inherited by Independent India was at the root of many of the deficiencies drawbacks of Indian agriculture. The note attempts to review the major land reforms undertaken after Independence. However, the experience proves that the land reforms failed in creating a land system which would make significant impact on agricultural production and ownership patterns.
