Abstract
Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Vidyamandir (KDAV) is located in the township of Reliance refinery in Jamnagar. The school has classes from preschool to grade XII with more than 3000 children and 198 teachers. The case describes process of change as conceived and implemented during five year tenure of Mr. Sundaram as principal of the school. The change, focused on primary section of the school, was aimed at introducing activity based teaching and learning in place of text-book based teaching, initiating continuous and comprehensive assessment and grading as against end of the term examination and development of a culture where teachers and children enjoy participating in curricular as well as co-curricular activities. All this was made possible as a result of teamwork under the leadership of the principal by developing a road map for change which kept on evolving as the change unfolded. Process of change was accompanied by creation of several levels of authority, decentralisation and delegation of responsibility to coordinators and teachers, and building capacity to take on the new roles. Participative nature of change resulted in the ownership of change among all the stake holders, including parents.
