Abstract

The case describes the kind of information collected by field workers and other officials in Kanhas PHC. The registers and records include target couple registers, stock registers, education register, case register, and daily diary. The ANMs and FPHAs are expected to maintain twelve registers. An interview with the block extension educator describes how this information is utilized for devising a work methodology, initiating follow up services, and conducting performance evaluation. The conversation with the medical officer reveals that the information system is designed mainly to meet the information needs of higher-level officials and is of little use to the PHC. Even though field workers maintain a multitude of registers and fill up a number of forms, often very important information is not maintained properly, if the district bureau does not require it. The medical officer outlines his information needs based on the kind of decision he makes.
