Gazra Café: Managing Two Ends of a Rainbow

Abstract

Gazra Café, the first eatery in Gujarat to be managed by the LGBTQIA+ community, is a unique initiative started by the royal family of Baroda (Vadodara) in 2022 with an objective to include inclusivity in business. The café garnered a good amount of interest among customers and the employees because of its unique business model and socially inclusive approach. By early 2025, Radhikaraje Gaekwad, the queen of the royal family of Vadodara (the founder of the café), and Prachi Agarwal, a key stakeholder, pondered whether to scale the café business or not. The case involves various issues that arise in managing a small business, such as decisions related to scaling (growth with full control but high financial dependence or growth with partial control and low financial expectation), business model (a subsidiary versus a separate entity or franchisee) and how to communicate with the target audience.
