How can I tell the case searched by me has a teaching note?

If you are a registered and approved academic user, products with related teaching notes have a TN icon appearing in the search result.  Clicking on the icon, or on the PDF symbol will open the teaching note file.

Am I required to log in or register in order to make a purchase?

Yes. if you are planning to buy online you need to register and then login.

Are all cases listed on the IIMA main website available online?

No. Only a part of the cases data base is placed on line as of now. It includes all the latest cases registered. The process of putting all the cases on line is in progress and should be over soon

Are teaching notes available for sale?

No. teaching notes are not sold. They are available to the registered faculty members and trainers as inspection only which is free of cost.

Are there any facility for buying unlimited number of IIMA cases for Educational Institutions on Annual Contract Agreement?

Yes. There are three alternate options for buying unlimited number of IIMA cases for Educational Institutions on Annual Contract Agreement as given below:

ACA, Option "A" for downloading unlimited number of IIMA cases for specific number of students @ Rs.1500/- per student.  The institute has to specify the number of students in each programme and the total number of students including all programmes and pay the amount (Total number of students X Rs.1500/-) (Inclusive of Service-tax) to IIMA while entering the contract for one year period.

ACA, Option "B" for downloading unlimited number of IIMA cases for any number of students by paying Rs.7,50,000/- (Rupees seven lakh fifty thousand) (Inclusive of Service-tax) lump sum to IIMA for entering the contract for one year period.

ACA, Option "C" for downloading unlimited number of IIMA cases for annual contract of Three years with a discount of 25% on pricing under Option "A" of INR 4,500/- (Rupees Four Thousand Five Hundred) (Inclusive of Service-tax) per student (Total number of students x INR 4,500/-) or Option "B" of INR 22,50,000/- (Rupees Twenty Two Lakhs Fifty Thousand) (Inclusive of Service-tax) for any number of students.

 

Are there only cases in the case bank?

No. IIMA case bank has a collection of technical notes explaining a concept or tool in the hands of management or a note on the industry.

Are there other publications of IIMA?

Yes. IIMA publishes a journal for decision makers called Vikalpa. This journal publishes research articles, cases and perspectives. Its objective is to disseminate concepts of professional management and contribute to a better understanding of the context, resources, structures, systems, processes, and performance of organizations. You may access them on Vikalpa@iima.ac.in

Can corporations sponsor case writing projects?

Yes. Corporations can support case writing projects of mutual interest. IIMA goes through a structured process of interactions with the corporation before committing itself to the case writing project. It is desired that the cases that are developed under the project are made available to the academic community as a whole.

Can I access IIMA library resources?

IIMA library is equipped with a collection of over 1,77,306 books, 42,004 bound volumes, current subscription to journals (print - 226 & online - 945), 30 newspapers, 2257 working papers, and many other resources like 265 thesis, 1745 student's project reports, 2085 CDs and 132 videos. Can I access the working papers of IIMA faculty members and their associates?

Yes. IIMA's research and publications division has a separate site that provides free access to the working papers of IIMA faculty members and their associates. Email: respub@iima.ac.in

Can I become a part of the editorial panel for editing cases?

Yes. IIMA invites interested persons with experience in editing to be a part of the panel. There is a process of screening the applications and getting back to the persons. The selected persons have to undergo a workshop on editing before taking up the editorial tasks. IIMA would bear the expenses of travel and boarding of the participants called for the workshop.

Can I distribute IIMA cases to my students electronically?

This is possible in principle. You need to write separately for this.

Can I download the case study immediately/instantly?

Yes.

After the payment is made, you will be automatically re-directed to a download page where you will be able to download the case PDF as attachment file.

Please do not close the browser window when you are being re-directed.

You will also receive an e-mail with a link(s) to the download page where you can download the case(s).

Can I make reproductions from inspection copies?

No. Inspection copies downloaded at no charge come with a diagonal watermark saying inspection copy only.

Reproductions must be made from permitted copies, which can be purchased as a soft copy.

Can I make the copies myself?

You can make copies from the master electronic copy only as per the information provided by you at the time of ordering the document. Various blurbs declaring the person authorized to use and the course for which it is meant appear on the case and the agreement is sacrosanct.

Can I pay with a credit card or debit card?

Yes. You can pay with your credit/debit card

Can I request permission to include an IIMA case in a textbook?

The text book permission request form specifies the terms and conditions surrounding textbook permissions, including the process and permission fee.

Can I translate an IIMA case and/or use it in a business journal?

It depends on what you want to do with the translation. Please write an email to the Case Centre to know more about it.

Can I write cases and submit them to IIMA for registration?
As of now IIMA registers cases written by IIMA faculty or by others in association with IIMA faculty. We will post an appropriate message if there is a change in this policy.
Can my students independently buy the recommended case online?

Yes. They can buy after registering themselves as students. Go to question no 18 and step 3 on registration process.

Can there be cases based on secondary/published information?

Yes, there can be cases based on secondary information. They are developed based on information available in the public domain. Whenever such cases are developed, the case writer mentions the sources of information according to a protocol of referencing. IIMA uses the guidelines provided by the American Psychology Association (APA).

Can we contact the faculty members directly for sponsored case writing projects?

Yes. You can also write to the Director of IIMA stating your intentions. The Director will constitute an appropriate team to take the case writing project forward.

Can we write to the faculty members and suggest case leads that could be followed?

Yes. On receipt of your lead, the faculty member would evaluate the lead independently and get back to you with his/her response.

Can’t View PDF file?

It might be possible due to any of the following reason.

•  Old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

•  Issues related to configuration of your web browser.

•  If the PDF file is 4 MB or larger, the web browser may time out before it finishes downloading the file. 

Do IIMA Alumni play any role in building the IIMA case bank?

Yes. The alumni can write cases in collaboration with IIMA faculty members. 

Do participants of various programmes of IIMA write cases?

Yes. We encourage the participants of various programmes to write cases in collaboration with IIMA faculty members. 

Does IIMA conduct case writing and/or teaching workshops?

Yes. IIMA conducts case writing and teaching workshops. There is an open programme that provides opportunities to the interested individuals and teams from business schools and corporations. IIMA also organizes customized case writing - teaching workshops .for business schools and corporations. For details please contact either the Director or the identified faculty members.

Does IIMA have any plans to be a case clearing house?

We may. Right now our focus is on launching and strengthening this site. We might think of linking ourselves with the case writers in other business schools after stabilizing our current effort. Does IIMA provide free down loads?

Right now no. We have plans to provide access 'copy right free' materials that faculty may share with the site.

How can I buy cases which are not yet available on the web site?

How can I get reprints of the papers of IIMA faculty members?

You have to get in touch with them directly. You can obtain their e-mail id and contact details by accessing IIMA's site http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/faculty-and-research/faculty-profile/alphabetical-list.html (Example: Prof. M.R. How can I identify the sector or the discipline to which the case belongs?
This is quite simple. The search list identifies the case by both the sector and the discipline.
How can I limit my search to find only cases with teaching notes?

If you are logged in as a registered and approved academic user, one of the refine search areas is Teaching Note.  A search will return all available products; clicking on “available” in the Teaching Note refines the search area to limit the results only to those with a related teaching note.

How can I see only cases and not technical notes and exercises in my results?

One of the refine search areas is product type.  The product types available based on your initial search will be displayed.  Clicking on one of the available product types will limit your results to that product type.

How do I download a case study? What do I do when I check out?

There is a simple 4-step process to pay for/download a case study:Registration,Ordering,Payment and Downloading the case.

Procedure for checking out: Add a case to the shopping cart .You click the ‘Add to cart’ button on the case detail page. The selected case is then added to the shopping cart. You can choose to add more cases to the cart by clicking on continue shopping or can proceed to checkout by clicking on the payment logo appearing in the cart window.

How do I get permission to reproduce copies of a case or an article?

You need to write to the Case Centre Office for that. There is a fee attached to provide this permission.

How do I receive my downloads and view my order history?

After logging in, go to My Orders page.  From here you can open your digital downloads, see your order history, adjust permission orders, and re-use previous orders.

How do I search for a case?
The website has three types of search facilities. Regular search, advanced search and exact search. Regular search is on words that the user is looking for. This search throws up possibilities. The user selects from this set. In the case of exact search the user enters the exact phrase or title the user is looking for. The site returns the exact case or note the user is looking for. The user can refine the search through advanced search.
How do I update my profile, password, or address?

After logging in, go to My Profile page.  You can update your password, name, address and communications preferences on this page.

How does a learner learn from the case?

The learner learns from the case through a multi stage involvement. The learner reads the case and comprehends the nature of the decision making situation, identifies the decisions to be made, generates and evaluates options and makes a choice. He/she thinks through an execution plan and contingencies. The learner develops his Knowledge, Attitudes, Skills and Habits (KASH) by repeated in involvement in such decision making situation.

How much do your cases cost or what is the pricing scheme for your cases?

IIMA has developed a very simple pricing scheme. The drop down on pricing provides the details.

How old is IIMA? When did it start using the case method?

IIMA was set up in a tripartite collaboration between the Government of India, Government of Gujarat and Indian Industry on December 11, 1961. Initial support for setting up the institute came from Ford Foundation and Harvard Business School. The collaboration lasted for five years. IIMA then carved out its own path of progress. Teaching learning activities of the Institute began with a three tier programme also started in 1964. The case method found its root in 1965 itself. Both case writing and teaching began almost together. It is still the flagship programme of the Institute with offerings for middle, senior and top levels in management. The two year Post Graduate programme started in 1965.

   9. Refresh the page or visit a new page for settings to take effect.

 To enable JavaScript in Firefox 3.0:

   1. Click the Tools menu option in the toolbar.

   2. Select Options. A dialog will pop up.

   3. Click the Content icon

   4. Check the Enable JavaScript checkbox.

   5. Click the OK button.

   6. Refresh the page or visit a new page for settings to take effect.

To enable JavaScript in Safari 4.0 and 5.0:

   1. Click on the Safari menu in Safari.

   2. Click on Preferences.

   3. Click on Security.

   4. Make sure these checkboxes are checked: Enable Plug-ins, Enable Java, and Enable JavaScript.

   5. Make sure the Block pop-up windows box is not selected.

JavaScript should be enabled by default in Google Chrome. To ensure it is:

   1. Right click on your Google Chrome shortcut.

   2. Click Properties.

   3. On the target line, ensure disable-JavaScript is not present. If it is, delete it.

   4. Click Apply.

How will I know that my payment has been processed?

You will receive an automatic billing confirmation via email as soon as the payment is authorized.  You can also check the status of your order through a secure link that will be provided to you.

I am a corporate trainer, is it possible for me to obtain teaching notes?

Yes. You can if register yourself as a trainer.

I did not receive an email with the download link. What do I do?

a. You may have entered the wrong/incorrect email id while making the payment transaction.

b. You can send an email with the transaction details (like transaction ID, case study purchased etc.) to caseweb@iima.ac.in

I have completed the Registration process. Now I want to browse and select cases of my choice. How can I do that?

Our product search is designed to help you find the right materials for your teaching needs:

•  click on the Advanced search tab in the navigation menu directly above this box to drop down the search form

•  enter your search criteria and click the search button

•  your search will generate a list of items that match your search criteria

•  to help you select the best items for your needs most products have on-line inspection copies for you to preview (you must be registered and approved as an educator)

•  when you're ready to order simply click the add to “My Cart” link next to the item you require. Then checkout.

I have selected cases of my choice and added up with “My Cart”. Now what should I do?

Once you have found the product(s) you need, ordering from IIMA is fast and easy. Add the selected cases to “My Cart’, then checkout. Please follow IIMA’s Case Website ordering procedures. This will avoid unnecessary delays in processing your order. If you are ordering for teaching purposes, we require the name of the instructor and the title and date of the course.

I live in another country.  Can I access the cases and buy for educational use?
Of course you can. You can register, search, order, pay and down load.
I want to sign up for your “E-Bulletin”. How can I do that? What information will I get from your E-Bulletin?

Yes, you can. Please opt (sign up) for E-Bulletin that provides updates on the recent cases,technical notes and teaching notes developed by IIMA faculty and their associates.

Is case analysis intuitive or are there structured approaches?

Case analysis is a symbiotic combination of structured approach and intuitive analysis. There are frameworks, checklist of questions, theories and concepts to guide the comprehension and analysis of the learner.

Is IIMA organized functional discipline wise? Are cases available according to this organization?

IIMA is organized along Areas, Groups and Centres. Areas are sentient groups that are responsible for the design and delivery of programmes and courses. Centres are interest group that around shared research areas. They are responsible for initiating research and publishing in those areas. Right now at IIMA there are 8 Areas, 3 Groups and 10 Centres.

The Areas are: 1. Business Policy Area, 2. Communication Area, 3. Economics Area, 4. Finance & Accounting Area, 5. Marketing Area, 6. Organizational Behaviour Area, 7. Human Resource Management Area, 8. Production and Quantitative Methods Area.

Is it safe to use my credit card?

We are using third-party credit card processing; orders placed online will be processed immediately through the third-party supplier.

Is there a difference between case and case study?

Yes. There is a distinction between case and case study. The case describes the situation faced by the manager. It does not analyze the situation or offer a commentary or a decision. A case study offers a commentary or a decision along with the description of the situation.

Is there a set procedure for buying cases on the site?

Yes.

Registration is the first step. For this you need to go to IIMA case website: cases.iima.ac.in. Remember there is no www to be written in the browser box.

Click on ‘Register’. Give complete information by filling-up all the required details. Follow the following steps

Step 1: complete the on-line form. Register yourself on any one of the following category: 1. Faculty/Trainer (FAC); 2. Ph.D Students (PHD); 3. Students (STD); 4. Executives(EXE); 5. Educational Institutions (EDI); 6. Corporates (COR) and 7. Others (OTHR)

Step 2: Wait for confirmation of your registration from Case Centre except ‘Others’. They can directly go for searching and selecting cases.

Step 3: Following your verification we'll check your registration within one working day. After receiving confirmation of registration then ‘Login’ again.

Step 4: Search and select cases. If you are ordering for teaching purposes, you need to mention the name of the instructor, the title of the course and the duration of the course. This would appear on every page as a blurb in the document that is bought by you. Then add them to ‘My Cart’ and then checkout.

Step 5: You will receive an invoice through email.

Step 6: Make payment online through Credit Card or Debit Card or Net-Banking. You will receive the invoice after making the payment. Make payment through cheque payable par at all branches in India or through a Demand Draft. The cheque and DD should be drawn in favour of “Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad” payable at Ahmedabad. Is there sufficient variety in IIMA case bank?

Yes, there is sufficient variety in IIMA case bank. The cases belong to diverse sectors ranging from agriculture and animal husbandry to software, to various functional areas from Operation Management to Strategic Management. They represent various sizes and stages of organization growth.

Some cases are marked for IIMA use only. What does it mean?

On the case website you do come across cases marked for IIMA use only. This means that the organizations that have allowed IIMA to write cases have imposed restrictions on its usage. These cases are not available to colleagues from other business schools. IIMA makes efforts to request the organizations to release the case for the use of all business schools.

What are Cookies, how do they work?

A cookie is a small text file that is sent to your computer via your web browser when you visit the website. These cookies are used to store information about you for the next time you visit the site. Cookie files are a great way for website to remember you when you next visit.

What are technical notes?

Technical notes are notes prepared by the faculty members and their associates on concepts, theories or frameworks in management.

What are the identity proofs for the various categories of users?

•  The documents required are as follows:

•  Ph. D. Students: Statement from Guide, Head of the Department or Dean or a competent administrative authority

•  Faculty: Statement of Institute affiliation attested by the Dean or a competent administrative authority

•  Corporate: Visiting card mentioning the designation and the name of the organization

What do I do if I come across errors, inconsistencies or gaps in the case or the teaching notes?

We have taken care to edit the cases and the teaching notes before they are uploaded. In fact, we conducted workshops for the editors to formulate guidelines for editing and assure consistency. The cases are uploaded only after the faculty members have gone through the edited cases and finalized. Despite this, there could be errors, inconsistencies and gaps. Please bring them to our attention at the earliest. We will learn from it, strengthen our guidelines and capabilities to write and edit.

What is a case?

Case is the description of a real life situation faced by a decision maker. The case writers go to the decision maker’s place, interact with him/her and with others who were associated with the decision making situation and develops a document for use in the class room. The cases based on such primary information are taken up for class room use only after they are cleared by the organization involved.

What is a teaching note?

Teaching notes are guides for teaching the case by colleagues at IIMA or in other management schools. They define the objectives of the case, relevance in various programmes and courses, positioning of the case, approach to case analysis, stages in class handling, helpful readings and experience with teaching the case.

What is the file format in which I will get the case?

All cases are available in PDF format only.

What is the preponderance of cases in IIMA case bank?

Majority of the cases are based on primary information. The faculty members and their associates have visited the field, interacted with decision makers and developed their cases following a structured approach to case writing.

What is verification?

IIMA wishes to provide its cases, technical notes and exercises to bonafide users only. Hence it verifies the affiliations of the users who register as students, faculty members, trainers and corporates. They are required to send scanned versions of their identity proofs.

What Software do I need to view PDF files online or for download?

The software used to read PDF (Portable Document Format) file is Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free from Adobe (URL: http://get.adobe.com/reader/).

What to do when the PDF file does not open correctly?

•  Download and install latest version of Acrobat Reader (See FAQ:4)

•  Press CTRL-key & F5-key together to reload.

•  Try viewing a downloaded PDF file from a different web browsers/computer/server.

Which are the recommended screen resolutions?

This site is best viewed in the screen resolution of  1024x768, 1280x768 or 1280x1024.

Which are the supported browsers?

For optimum viewing of this website, please make sure you are using one of the following supported browsers:

•  Internet Explorer version 7.0 & onwards.

•  Firefox version 3.0 & onwards.

•  Google Chrome.

Will I be billed in my local currency?

Yes,if you are an Indian. An invoice will be prepared for making payment on Indian rupees. This invoice will be sent to you for making the payment in Indian rupees. You can make payment in foreign currencies if you are an overseas buyer.

Will I be paid as an editor?

Yes. You will be paid as an editor. IIMA has developed a rate structure linked to the numbers of words and tables edited, quality of editing and the time taken to return and improvise. For details please write to: Case Centre  <caseweb@iima.ac.in>.
