Abstract
This case describes the 1979 status of "social forestry" activities in the state of Gujarat with particular emphasis on the jurisdiction of Ahmedabad Extension Circle. The social forestry activities considered are those in no-tribal, non-forest areas, viz. roadside and canal bank plantations, village woodlots, private tree farms, institutional premises, and botanical gardens. Some information on the national context of social forestry is provided along with details of organization and management aspects at the circle level. A comparative picture of community forestry activities of US state forestry agencies is also provided. The case is amenable to either a strategy formulation and implementation approach or to a market (segmentation) analysis and programming exercise.
