Abstract
This note contains material to be used to teach the basic concepts of point and interval estimation. Topics covered include the basic ideas of point estimation, unbiasedness and consistency. Also discussed are the method of moment estimators, ideas regarding standard error estimation and computation of confidence intervals. Methods to determine sample size to achieve a pre-specified degree of accuracy are also discussed. A number of examples are provided to illustrate the concepts.
