Abstract
The idea of cooperative farming was increasingly favoured during the First Plan. By mid-1950s there was clear recognition that the cooperative farming was an answer to the question of reorganizing agricultural production. But, the experience of cooperative farming revealed a number of shortcomings. Soon it became clear that, in India, conditions necessary for the voluntary transition to cooperative farming on a large scale were not present. In early 1960s the attention of the planners shifted from cooperative farming and the issue was dead.
