Abstract
This case explores Dozee—an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled system for remote patient monitoring. Dozee is the flagship product of Turtle Shell Technologies, co-founded by Mudit Dandawat and Gaurav Parchani. The product enables contactless tracking of vital health parameters such as heart rate and blood pressure. Set in the post-COVID era, the case focuses on strategic decisions confronting the founders, including improving technology, expanding market strategies and redefining the company’s identity in the healthcare market. As of June 2022, Dozee had been installed in more than 7,000 hospital beds across 378 hospitals, with significant adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its contactless monitoring capabilities. The company has raised INR 139 crores in different rounds of funding and holds three patents. Despite its success, Dozee faces competition from global and domestic firms in the patient monitoring systems market, which is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% by 2028. The case presents a set of dilemmas for the founders: (1). Should the company position itself as a sensor manufacturer or as a specialist in cutting-edge healthcare analytics? (2). With the pandemic receding into history and the company needing to redefine itself beyond the pandemic, should it consider options such as targeting businesses (B2B) vis-à-vis individual (B2C) consumers? (3). Should the company target a specific area or every therapeutic area within hospitals? The path taken by the company will determine its trajectory and the role it will play in transforming healthcare technology.
