Abstract
Building Products Limited (a company with 65% foreign ownership of equity) is a major producer of asbestos-based products in the country. The product is currently very profitable, but viewed as "mature" by the new managing director. The company has accumulated large liquid funds out of its past profits. It has access to the knowhow available with the foreign holding company. The case is related to the need for a formal planning system in the company and the problems of mechanics, sequence and formats for introducing corporate planning. The case analysis requires students to consider the various constraints on the company's operations arising out of scarce and imported raw material, tight foreign exchange allocation, restrictions imposed by the MRTP Act, severe export competition, strained industrial relations, and environmental factors such as government curbs on growth and expansion of foreign concerns and their equity ownership patterns. The students are required to specify the design features of the proposed corporate planning system and the mode of introduction, and finally simulate the broad contents of the plan.
