Abstract
Rapid technological changes and convergence of media had made "triple play" (i.e. voice, video, and internet) available on a single channel. In India, traditionally the cable TV network provided TV services and telecom network provided telecom/internet services. While some telecom companies had upgraded their networks to provide for DSL connections to handle broadband internet, cable TV companies had limited experience using existing networks for broadband service owing to low quality infrastructure, upgradation costs, etc. Ortel Communications Limited (OCL) was a small startup company that nurtured the vision of providing triple play through a cable network in one of the most backward states of India, Orissa. Rath, a member of the senior management team at OCL, now had a business plan before him and was weighing its chances. The case highlights managerial and technological challenges OCL faced and provides a platform for discussing issues of market segmentation and challenges faced by a smaller company when interfacing with established competitors.
