Abstract
K.B. Agrawal High School, in the small town of Deesa in Gujarat, hosted Baalmelo (“Children’s fair” in Gujarati) in 2024 under the aegis of Vishwagram Trust, a Gujarat-based nongovernmental organisation. This case examines Baalmelo as a model of cultural exchange, skill development and social learning. In a state shaped by communal violence and caste stratification, Baalmelo’s homestay model has had significant importance since 2015. Baalmelo 2024 brought together around 500 students from different socio-economic backgrounds, castes and religions for an intensive three-day experience. Thirty-two activity-based stalls combined traditional crafts with modern technologies. Participants engaged with innovative educators and interacted with artisans. A unique homestay model was integrated into this Baalmelo, where participants lived with families of students from the host school. Although Vishwagram and the host school faced substantial logistical, financial and cultural challenges, Baalmelo created rich opportunities for experiential learning that are often missing from formal schooling and home environments, leading to the development of social cohesion. This case covers the Gandhian Sarvodaya movement and the historical and philosophical foundations of the event, from its operational execution in February 2024 to its complex multistakeholder ecosystem. It also focuses on the specific hurdles faced and overcome by the host school and the trust. The case shows the demonstrable, yet nuanced, impact on bridging social divides within the regional context of rural Gujarat.
