Abstract
Describes the formation of an employees' union in a large bank in which the management had adopted personal and social acquaintance as an important basis for recruitment at the clerical level. Management was at first indifferent to the union but recognized it after an agitation. Subsequently, meetings were held between the two parties, leading to the settlement of several outstanding issues. After an amicable beginning, however, tension began to appear at the union-management meetings. Meanwhile, a dispute regarding profitsharing bonus was referred to an industrial tribunal. The case can be used to discuss the meaning of unionism for management and the alternative managerial responses to an emerging union.
