Abstract
The agricultural sector in 1947 dominated the Indian economy. It was, however, stagnant for decades. The production performance, particularly with respect to food, was extremely unsatisfactory. The agricultural sector inherited by Independent India was characterized by the handicaps of traditional subsistence agriculture. The problem was not merely raising the productivity but social justice to cultivators, creating infrastructure evolving organization, correction of imbalance resulting from the partition of the country were equally important issues.
