The main objective of this note is to present an overview of the agricultural sector in India during the first half of the present century. It covers three aspects: 1) place of the agricultural sector in the Indian economy (Section I), 2) agricultural production trends (Section II), 3) major features of the agricultural sector (Section III). Understing of these aspects is necessary in order to appreciate the performance of the agricultural sector of India after 1947.
